STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

CONGRATULATING THE HONOLULU JAPANESE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ON the occasion of ITS 110^TH ANNIVERSARY.

 

 

     WHEREAS, the prosperity and well-being of our communities depend on the vision and entrepreneurial spirit of individuals and organizations working collaboratively for the benefit of the greater good; and

 

     WHEREAS, originally named the Shonin Doshikai, the HONOLULU JAPANESE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE was founded in 1900 to aid victims of a downtown Honolulu fire and, later, expanded its focus to include promotion of trade with Japan; and

 

     WHEREAS, during World War II, the HONOLULU JAPANESE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE solidified its presence in Hawaii's business community, demonstrating strong and courageous leadership for Japanese-Americans who faced discrimination and internment, and, by 1968, the organization had grown to become an associate member of the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, today, the HONOLULU JAPANESE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, composed of over 600 members representing a cross section of Honolulu’s business, industrial, and professional sectors, is continuously growing and evolving under innovative and enthusiastic leadership to support economic development and international relations; and

 

     WHEREAS, the HONOLULU JAPANESE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE was instrumental in the development of the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, a facility dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich and unique cultural heritage of the Japanese in Hawaii; now, therefore, 

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2010, that this body hereby congratulates the HONOLULU JAPANESE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE on the occasion of its 110^th Anniversary, recognizes its outstanding record of community service and leadership, and extends its best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
