HOUSE RESOLUTION
urging the united states postal service to expand or relocate the post office in pahoa, hawaii, to better serve the needs of the community.
WHEREAS, Pahoa, Hawaii, is a census-designated place in the district of Puna on the island of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, according to the 2020 census, the population of Pahoa is 920 individuals; and
WHEREAS, while Pahoa is a small community, the Pahoa post office serves a population of 22,069 residents in the communities of Ainaloa, Fern Acres, Hawaiian Acres, Hawaii Beaches, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Kalapana, Keau, Kurtistown, Leilani Estates, Nanawale Estates, and Orchidland Estates; and
WHEREAS, the Pahoa post office has reached its full capacity and can no longer adequately service the Pahoa community or the surrounding areas; and
WHEREAS, customers at Pahoa post office often have long wait times to receive service, as the post office is too small to accommodate necessary staff; and
WHEREAS, there is not enough parking to serve the many customers that come to do business at the Pahoa post office; and
WHEREAS, it is vital for the Pahoa post office to be relocated to a facility that can adequately accommodate the needs of the Pahoa community and where postal service customers can be protected from the weather while they wait in line; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2023, that the United States Postal Service is urged to expand or relocate the post office in Pahoa, Hawaii, to better serve the needs of the community; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the United States Postmaster General and the members of Hawaii's congressional delegation.
