HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

Recognizing the Ocean Safety Divisions and Ocean Safety Officers of Hawaii County, Kauai County, Maui County, and the City and County of Honolulu.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the ocean plays a vital role for Hawaii, its people, and its visitors; and

 

     WHEREAS, as the ocean can prove to be unpredictable and dangerous, there are individuals who put their lives at risk on a daily basis to ensure the safety of those enjoying the ocean; and

 

     WHEREAS, to ensure the safety of beachgoers, ocean safety officers go through intensive training in ocean rescue, ocean rescue prevention, emergency medical first response, dispatched mobile, and injury prevention programs; and

 

     WHEREAS, the following ocean safety divisions provided outstanding service to their respective counties; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii County's Ocean Safety Division ensures the safety of beachgoers around Hawaii Island by providing lifeguard services at over 12 beaches throughout the island including Honolii, Richardson's, Leliwi, Onekahakaha, Carlsmith, Isaac Hale, Ahalanui, Punaluu, Kahaluu, Laaloa, Hapuna, and Spencer beach; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Ocean Safety Bureau of the County of Kauai has a total of 56 Ocean Safety Officers to provide lifeguard services throughout the island from the North District, Kee Beach to Hanalei Pavilion; to the East District, Anahola to Lydgate Beach and to the South/West district, Poipu to Kekaha Beach; and

     WHEREAS, the ocean safety officers in Maui County provide lifeguard services for over 10 beaches throughout the island; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division in the City and County of Honolulu provides ocean safety services for 198 miles of Oahu's coastline, divided into four regions; South Shore (Pearl Harbor to Maunalua Bay), Windward (Maunalua Bay to Mokapu Peninsula), North Shore (Mokapu Peninsula to Kaena Point), and Leeward (Kaena Point to Pearl Harbor); and

 

     WHEREAS, ocean safety officers put their lives at risk to ensure the safety of all; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2017, that this body recognizes and commends the OCEAN SAFETY DIVISIONS AND THE OCEAN SAFETY OFFICERS OF THE COUNTIES OF HAWAII, MAUI, HONOLULU, AND KAUAI for their hard work and dedication to the safety of both residents and visitors, and extends its best wishes for their continued success in the future.
