HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

PROCLAIMING MARCH AS RED CROSS MONTH AND HONORING THE AMERICAN RED CROSS ON THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE AMERICAN RED CROSS' SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF HAWAI‘I.

 

 

 


WHEREAS, the AMERICAN RED CROSS OF HAWAI‘I has supported the State of Hawai‘i in many capacities during its 100 years as an organization, and has stepped up and answered the call to offer relief and kindness to the people of Hawai‘i; and

 

WHEREAS, the AMERICAN RED CROSS OF HAWAI‘I was established on August 23, 1917, under the auspices of the War Relief Committee and officially chartered by the American Red Cross as the “Honolulu Chapter” to start the American Red Cross of Hawai‘i's humanitarian mission which lasted for 100 years and counting; and

 

WHEREAS, the AMERICAN RED CROSS OF HAWAI‘I is the first organization called by first responders and responds to disasters by providing not only food, clothing, and shelter, but crisis counseling; it is on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year responding to not only everyday fires and floods, but also major natural and man-made disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and plane crashes; and

 

WHEREAS, 97 percent of the AMERICAN RED CROSS OF HAWAI‘I is made up of volunteers, with volunteers contributing to the AMERICAN RED CROSS OF HAWAI‘I's ability to be ready to respond to disasters and providing 20,000 people per year with the education and means to save lives; notable volunteers throughout history include Queen Lili‘uokalani, Princess Ka‘iulani, Duke Kahanamoku, and the late United States Senator Daniel Inouye; and

WHEREAS, volunteers from the AMERICAN RED CROSS OF HAWAI‘I have been deployed nationally to all of the Hawaiian Islands, New York, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, internationally to Japan and the United States island territory of Guam to provide support and assistance; and

 

WHEREAS, the AMERICAN RED CROSS OF HAWAI‘I supports educating and preparing our communities through CPR and AED training to save lives in emergency situations that can happen at home, in the workplace, or anywhere and education for disaster preparation and prevention; now, therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawai‘i, Regular Session of 2017, that this body hereby proclaims March as Red Cross Month and congratulates and honors the AMERICAN RED CROSS OF HAWAI‘I on its 100th Anniversary in service to the people of the State of Hawaii.
