HOUSE RESOLUTION
DESIGNATING APRIL 28, 2017, AS "WORKERS' MEMORIAL DAY" IN HAWAII IN MEMORY OF WORKERS KILLED, INJURED, OR DISABLED on the job.
WHEREAS, every year in America, thousands of workers are killed as a result of workplace injuries and occupational illnesses; and
WHEREAS, since 1989, Workers' Memorial Day has been observed throughout the world annually on April 28 to remember workers killed, injured, or disabled as a result of their work; and
WHEREAS, April 28 was designated as Workers' Memorial Day because it is the anniversary of the founding of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration; and
WHEREAS, in 2015, according to the most recently available data from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, 4,836 of the nation's workers fell victim to fatal work injuries, while approximately 2,900,000 nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses were reported by private industry employers nationwide; and
WHEREAS, in 2015, 18 Hawaii workers fell victim to fatal work injuries; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to honor and pay
tribute to the courageous and dedicated members of Hawaii's labor force who
have been injured, disabled, or killed as a result of their work; and
WHEREAS, it is necessary to recognize the integrity of Hawaii's workforce
and the workforce's contributions to economic growth; and
WHEREAS, the Legislature continues to pursue and call for increased workplace safety; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2017, that April 28, 2017, be designated as "Workers' Memorial Day" in Hawaii in memory of workers killed, injured, or disabled on the job; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor and the Director of Labor and Industrial Relations.
