HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

requesting the department of land and natural resources to undertake beach nourishment from laniakea beach to velzyland beach on the north shore of oahu.

 

 

 

     WHEREAS, rising sea levels around the world are one of the major impacts of climate change; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii has not been spared from the effects of rising sea levels and the damage that they cause to shorelines; and

 

     WHEREAS, rising sea levels in Hawaii have caused erosion of the shoreline and a drastic reduction in the size of the islands' beaches; and

 

     WHEREAS, an effective method for combatting shoreline erosion is beach nourishment, a process by which sand that has been lost through longshore drift or erosion is replaced from other sources; and

 

WHEREAS, a wider beach can reduce storm damage to coastal property by dissipating energy across the surf zone and protecting upland structures and infrastructure from storm surges, tsunamis, and unusually high tides; and

 

     WHEREAS, one of the places in Hawaii that has experienced severe shoreline erosion is the North Shore of Oahu; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2022, the Senate concurring, that the Department of Land and Natural Resources is requested to undertake beach nourishment from Laniakea Beach to Velzyland Beach on the North Shore of Oahu; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Land and Natural Resources is requested to submit to the Legislature, no later than twenty days prior to the Regular Session of 2023, a report of its progress on undertaking beach nourishment from Laniakea Beach to Velzyland Beach on the North Shore of Oahu; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor and Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources.
