A BILL FOR AN ACT
relating to mental health education.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. Chapter 302A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to part II, subpart B, to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:
"§302A- Health
course requirement. Each
secondary public school shall require as a condition for graduation completion
of a health education course that:
(1) Instructs
students on the multiple dimensions of health, including the relationship
between physical health and mental health; and
(2) Enhances
understandings, improves attitudes, and encourages behaviors that promote good health,
well-being, and human dignity."
SECTION 2. Chapter 302A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to part III, subpart B, to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:
"§302A- Suicide prevention; in-service training. The department shall require that in-service training include at least two hours of suicide prevention education for all teachers and principals each school year. This education may be accomplished through self-review of suicide prevention materials approved by the department."
SECTION 3. New statutory material is underscored.
SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect upon its approval; provided that section 1 shall apply to students graduating after January 1, 2022.
