A RESOLUTION


Commending Reverend Dr. Cameron Madison Alexander; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Reverend Dr. Cameron Madison Alexander has devoted his life to preaching the Word of God and leading his community, and this year marks the 40th anniversary of his arrival at Antioch Baptist Church North; and

WHEREAS, Pastor Alexander was born in Atlanta, valiantly served in the United States Air Force, and later went on to graduate from Morehouse College and the Morehouse School of Religion; and

WHEREAS, his first sermon at Antioch in 1969, entitled "There Is a Man in Town" etched an indelible mark on the hearts of the Antioch congregation and was a fitting title that foreshadowed the enormous impact Pastor Alexander would come to have upon the church and the City of Atlanta; and

WHEREAS, for 40 years, Pastor Alexander has strengthened the foundation of the Antioch Church by pursuing opportunites for growth that have fulfilled his goal of increasing outreach ministries, amassing numerous parcels of land on behalf of the church, and successfully establishing nine missions; and

WHEREAS, Pastor Alexander's compassion for the poor and overlooked is evident with his establishment of the nationally acclaimed Antioch Urban Ministries, Inc., a nonprofit organization which provides housing and support services for recovering addicts and individuals affected by AIDS, HIV, and noninfectious tuberculosis, in addition to employment opportunities and alternatives to incarceration for juveniles and first time offenders; and

WHEREAS, this visionary has devoted his life to preaching the Gospel, and his ministry combines the trained eye of the academician, the imagination and resourcefulness of the missionary, and the empathetic understanding of the loving pastor; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his great works and inspiring ministerial career, Pastor Alexander has been awarded honorary Doctor of Divinity degrees from the United Theological Seminary, the Interdenominational Theological Center, and the Carver Bible College; in addition, Pastor Alexander was honored by Morehouse College with the prestigious Bennie Award, the highest recognition the college gives to its most distinguished alumni, and has been inducted into the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame; and

WHEREAS, Pastor Alexander was honored with an invitation to submit a powerful and soul-stirring sermon to the Library of Congress on the inauguration of President Barack Obama, which will be archived in the American Folklife Center; and

WHEREAS, Pastor Alexander has been united in love and marriage to Barbara Jackson Alexander for 54 years and the two have been blessed with four remarkable children: Eric, Greg, Kenneth, and Maria; and

WHEREAS, under Pastor Alexander's guidance, Antioch Church has grown into a wonderful example of a strong Church that stands as a beacon of hope and an anchor in its community; and not only has Pastor Alexander had a profound impact upon the Antioch congregation, his influence and vision have had a trailblazing impact on Atlanta's vitality as a great city.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Reverend Dr. Cameron Madison Alexander for his unparalleled record of community service and his innumerable good works rendered on behalf of persons in need and extend to him their most sincere best wishes for continued health and happiness.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Reverend Dr. Cameron Madison Alexander.
