A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the City of Valdosta on its sesquicentennial anniversary; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, in December of 1860, the City of Valdosta was established by Act of the Georgia General Assembly as the new county seat for Lowndes County; and

WHEREAS, named in honor of Governor George Troup's estate, Valle d'Aosta, the City of Valdosta has prospered as the site of government, transportation, and commerce over the past 100 years; and

WHEREAS, Valdosta has become the hub of today's commercial and civic life for a 15 county region in South Georgia and North Florida, with the city offering a diverse mix of industries to its many residents and visitors; and

WHEREAS, Valdosta has flourished as a center for religious, educational, and cultural institutions and is the epicenter for numerous civic and social organizations; and

WHEREAS, voted ESPN's TitleTown U.S.A. in 2008 by fans across America, Valdosta provides outstanding quality of life through parks and recreation, arts and culture, and a thriving downtown district that serves as the heart of the community; and

WHEREAS, in commemoration of Valdosta's 150th anniversary, the city will hold a series of events and programs for its citizens highlighting the city's milestones, traditions, and legacy, culminating with a community-wide gathering; and

WHEREAS, the City of Valdosta continues to look with optimism toward the future while keeping the proud memory of its beginning close to its heart to share with succeeding generations.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend the City of Valdosta on its distinguished 150 year history and join with the citizens and officials in celebrating its sesquicentennial.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the mayor of Valdosta, Georgia.
