A RESOLUTION

Opposing the utilization of incarcerated inmates to staff municipal and county fire stations; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, firefighters have long been recognized by the citizens of this state for the vital role that they have played in leadership and their deep personal commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, historically, the Georgia Fire Service has supported the Georgia Department of Corrections inmate firefighter program; and

WHEREAS, recent economic conditions have precipitated the expansion of inmate utilization outside the inmate firefighter program; and

WHEREAS, by authorizing incarcerated felons to serve as firefighters a considerable risk is created concerning public trust and confidence; and

WHEREAS, the firefighters of Georgia have dedicated themselves to the protection of life and property from the beginning of their training at the Georgia Fire Academy through their cooperation with the state fire marshal in the investigation of fires and their causes; and

WHEREAS, by rendering essential public services professionally and selflessly, this state's firefighters help to assure an orderly society and enhance the citizenry's sense of security.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body oppose the utilization of incarcerated inmates to staff municipal and county fire stations.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to the public and the press.
