A
RESOLUTION
Opposing
the utilization of incarcerated inmates to staff municipal and county fire
stations; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
firefighters have long been recognized by the citizens of this state for the
vital role that they have played in leadership and their deep personal
commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
historically, the Georgia Fire Service has supported the Georgia Department of
Corrections inmate firefighter program; and
WHEREAS,
recent economic conditions have precipitated the expansion of inmate utilization
outside the inmate firefighter program; and
WHEREAS,
by authorizing incarcerated felons to serve as firefighters a considerable risk
is created concerning public trust and confidence; and
WHEREAS,
the firefighters of Georgia have dedicated themselves to the protection of life
and property from the beginning of their training at the Georgia Fire Academy
through their cooperation with the state fire marshal in the investigation of
fires and their causes; and
WHEREAS,
by rendering essential public services professionally and selflessly, this
state's firefighters help to assure an orderly society and enhance the
citizenry's sense of security.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body oppose the
utilization of incarcerated inmates to staff municipal and county fire
stations.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to the public and the press.
