A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
and celebrating the 73rd birthday of Dr. John "Doc" Bradley, Sr.; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Dr. John "Doc" Bradley, Sr., was born on April 18, 1936, in Beaumont, Texas, and
he went on to become the first African American student at Georgia Southern
University; and
WHEREAS,
in honor of this historical and ground-breaking distinction, Georgia Southern
has placed a commemorative plaque and oak tree recognizing Dr. Bradley's
contribution to the school and the state; and
WHEREAS,
affectionately known as "Doc" for his service to music education for over five
decades, Dr. Bradley earned a bachelor's degree from Texas Southern University,
a master's
degree from Vander-Cook College of Music, a doctoral degree from Southeastern University, and he completed his post-graduate studies at Georgia Southern University, the University of South Carolina, and Central Connecticut State University; and
degree from Vander-Cook College of Music, a doctoral degree from Southeastern University, and he completed his post-graduate studies at Georgia Southern University, the University of South Carolina, and Central Connecticut State University; and
WHEREAS,
a nationally known jazz musician and jazz educator, Dr. Bradley has performed
with such notable musicians as Bill Watrous, Jimmy Owens, Stanley Turtintine,
Gene Walker, Jimmy Coe, David Hardiman, Ed Thigpen, Doug Beach, Virgil Rodgers,
Wilton Felder, Hubert Laws, Stixx Hooper, Joseph Sample, Joan Cartwright, and
many others; and
WHEREAS,
his music library represents music written for him by composers such as Mark
Taylor, Doug Beach, Dean Sorenson, Mike Tomaro, and Jeff Jarvis;
and
WHEREAS,
under the direction of Dr. Bradley and Wayne Hoey, the Augusta State University
Conservatory Jazz Band was founded in 1998 in order to give students in the
Central Savannah River Area an opportunity to perform jazz music and to expose
them to various jazz styles; and
WHEREAS, the Conservatory Jazz Band performs twice within the school year at Augusta
State University and at other venues which include the Arts in the Heart of Augusta, Candlelight Jazz, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Morris Museum; and
WHEREAS, the Conservatory Jazz Band performs twice within the school year at Augusta
State University and at other venues which include the Arts in the Heart of Augusta, Candlelight Jazz, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Morris Museum; and
WHEREAS,
the Conservatory Jazz Band Concert held in the fall of 2008 was dedicated to the
University Hospital Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Patients;
and
WHEREAS,
many students credit Dr. Bradley with improving their musical skills and
inspiring them to attend colleges and universities to pursue a career in music
education; and
WHEREAS,
even during his battle with cancer and his recovery from a massive heart attack,
Dr. Bradley has demonstrated an unquestionable love of jazz and his passion
about music has driven him to commit his life to providing students with quality
musical insight and inspiring them to reach their utmost
potential.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
commending Dr. John "Doc" Bradley, Sr., on the occasion of his 73rd birthday and
wishing him many more years of happiness.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. John "Doc" Bradley,
Sr.
