A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Dr. Daniel W. Rahn; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. Daniel W. Rahn has made innumerable contributions during his tenure as President of the Medical College of Georgia and Senior Vice Chancellor for Health and Medical Programs for the University System of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Rahn has diligently and conscientiously devoted innumerable hours of his time, talent, and energy to the Medical College of Georgia since 1991, holding positions such as Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine, Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Training Program, Chief of General Internal Medicine, Director of the Center for Healthcare Improvement, Vice Dean for Clinical Activities for the School of Medicine; and

WHEREAS, since 2001, Dr. Rahn has served as the university's seventh president, during which time the school's number of applicants has increased over 40 percent and the number of minority students enrolled in the school now stands at 30 percent; and

WHEREAS, the Medical College of Georgia marked a 75 percent increase in sponsored research during Dr. Rahn's presidency, enabling tremendous strides in battling conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity, infection and inflammation, and neurological diseases; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Rahn helped expand the school's Augusta campus from 80 to almost 100 acres during his presidency, building such facilities as the Cancer Research Center, Health Sciences Building, phase two of the Interdisciplinary Research Building, and the Wellness Center and preparing the groundwork for new buildings for the School of Dentistry, the School of Medicine, and student housing; and

WHEREAS, he significantly enhanced the Medical College of Georgia's impact state wide, most notably by establishing partner, satellite, and distance-learning campuses throughout Georgia; and

WHEREAS, his efforts as President of the Medical College of Georgia have immeasurably advanced the university's mission of improving health and reducing the burden of illness on Georgia citizens; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Rahn's leadership and guidance have been instrumental as chairman of an Association of Academic Health Centers Health Workforce Shortage Advisory Committee, the Georgia Department of Community Health's Health Strategies Council, and the State of Georgia's Certificate of Need Study Commission; and

WHEREAS, he has received extensive renown and recognition state wide and beyond for his many accomplishments, including inclusion in Georgia Trend magazine's list of most influential Georgians; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Rahn's contributions to the field of medicine and his outstanding achievements in health care, biomedical research, and education are worthy of recognition.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Dr. Daniel W. Rahn for his dedicated service to the Medical College of Georgia and the State of Georgia and extend their most sincere best wishes for continued success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Daniel W. Rahn.
