Recognizing March 12, 2009, as World Kidney Day at the state capitol; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the main job of our kidneys is to remove toxins and excess water from our blood, and every day, our kidneys filter an average of 200 liters of blood; and

WHEREAS, the purpose of World Kidney Day is to raise awareness about the importance of our kidneys and to spread the message that kidney disease is common, harmful, and treatable; and

WHEREAS, one million Georgians, or one in nine adults, have kidney disease, with over 2,400 awaiting a kidney transplant; and

WHEREAS, the National Kidney Foundation of Georgia is fighting kidney disease with year-round programs aimed at preventing kidney and urinary tract diseases and improving the health and well-being of those affected by kidney disease; and

WHEREAS, promoting early detection and prevention of kidney disease will be an important step towards achieving the World Health Organization recommended goal of reducing death rates related to chronic kidney disease in the world by 2 percent per year over the next decade.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in recognizing March 12, 2009, as World Kidney Day at the state capitol and encourage Georgians to take this time to gain a greater awareness of chronic kidney disease.
