RESOLUTION
Recognizing
March 12, 2009, as World Kidney Day at the state capitol; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the main job of our kidneys is to remove toxins and excess water from our blood,
and every day, our kidneys filter an average of 200 liters of blood;
and
WHEREAS,
the purpose of World Kidney Day is to raise awareness about the importance of
our kidneys and to spread the message that kidney disease is common, harmful,
and treatable; and
WHEREAS,
one million Georgians, or one in nine adults, have kidney disease, with over
2,400 awaiting a kidney transplant; and
WHEREAS,
the National Kidney Foundation of Georgia is fighting kidney disease with
year-round programs aimed at preventing kidney and urinary tract diseases and
improving the health and well-being of those affected by kidney disease;
and
WHEREAS,
promoting early detection and prevention of kidney disease will be an important
step towards achieving the World Health Organization recommended goal of
reducing death rates related to chronic kidney disease in the world by 2 percent
per year over the next decade.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
recognizing March 12, 2009, as World Kidney Day at the state capitol and
encourage Georgians to take this time to gain a greater awareness of chronic
kidney disease.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the National Kidney
Foundation of Georgia.
