RESOLUTION
Recognizing
March 10, 2009, as Columbus Day at the state capitol; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Columbus region of Georgia is known for its fantastic visitor attractions,
expansive economic growth and development, and beautiful natural landscapes;
and
WHEREAS,
the greater Columbus region is preparing for dramatic growth with the moving of
the Armor School in Fort Knox to Fort Benning, which will bring an enormous
increase in population to the area; and
WHEREAS,
the region is known for its public and private partnerships that have generated
success for the area with projects such as the RiverCenter for the Performing
Arts and the Valley Partnership Joint Development Authority; and
WHEREAS,
for nearly 15 years, the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce has journeyed to
larger cities around the country to learn how to improve the Columbus area and
identify what steps can be taken to foster growth and development;
and
WHEREAS,
the community is working towards highlighting one of the largest class four
white water rapids on the Chattahoochee to attract eco-tourists to the area from
around the globe; and
WHEREAS,
Columbus is home to numerous national and international companies, including
Aflac, Carmike Cinemas, Fort Benning, Synovus, TSYS, and the W.C. Bradley
Company; and
WHEREAS,
the citizens of Columbus eagerly await the opening of the National Infantry
Museum this month which is expected to draw visitors from across the nation;
and
WHEREAS,
Columbus currently features exciting attractions such as the 15 mile Riverwalk,
the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, the Columbus Convention and Trade
Center, the Columbus Civic Center, the South Commons softball complex, historic
Golden Park, a skateboard park, the Columbus Museum, and the Springer Opera
House; and
WHEREAS,
the citizens of the Greater Columbus region are justly proud of their community,
its past, and its many contributions to this state, and it is only proper to
recognize March 10, 2009, as Columbus Day at the state capitol.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize
March 10, 2009, as Columbus Day at the state capitol and congratulate the
Greater Columbus region on its many outstanding accomplishments.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Greater Columbus
Chamber of Commerce.
