A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Colonel Eric Boe; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Colonel Eric Boe has brought distinction and honor to his country and his home state through his service as a pilot in the United States Air Force and an astronaut for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA); and

WHEREAS, Colonel Boe was reared and educated in Georgia, graduating from Henderson High School in Chamblee and earning a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology; and

WHEREAS, this great Georgian heard his call to service and was commissioned as an officer and a pilot in the United States Air Force after graduating with honors from the Air Force Academy; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Boe flew 55 combat missions over Iraq in support of Operation Southern Watch and went on to serve as a test pilot at Eglin Air Force Base, logging over 4,000 flight hours in more than 45 different aircraft; and

WHEREAS, he was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and two Air Medals, among others, for his exceptional service; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Boe was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 2000 and was named NASA Director of Operations at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Russia; and

WHEREAS, he embarked on his first spaceflight in 2008, piloting Space Shuttle Endeavor on STS-126 to expand and supply the International Space Station along with two fellow Georgia Tech graduates; and
WHEREAS, Colonel Boe is currently in orbit around the Earth piloting Space Shuttle Discovery on STS-133 delivering the Permanent Multipurpose Module to the ISS to ensure continuation of its important research efforts; and

WHEREAS, he has been supported in his patriotic commitments by his wife, Kristen, and their two children; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordinary accomplishments of this distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Colonel Eric Boe for his continuing and outstanding service to his country as an Air Force pilot and astronaut and convey their best wishes to him and his family in their future pursuits.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Colonel Eric Boe.
