A RESOLUTION

Recognizing May, 2010, as Breastfeeding Awareness Month; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, breastfeeding promotes bonding between a mother and child, creating a strong foundation for a nurturing family relationship, and provides an excellent nutritional start for babies; and

WHEREAS, breast milk is easily digested and contains antibodies from the mother that pass to the baby and help protect against illness, allergies, and dental decay; and

WHEREAS, studies have shown that breastfed babies are less likely to be obese children, thereby reducing rising health care costs related to childhood high blood pressure, Type II diabetes, heart disease, and asthma; and

WHEREAS, mothers benefit from breastfeeding as it helps burn calories and reduces the risk of some cancers, further lessening health care costs; and

WHEREAS, breastfeeding is recommended by the United States Surgeon General, the Georgia Breastfeeding Coalition, Georgia Department of Community Health, and a majority of health care professionals; and

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia supports continued research and education in promoting breastfeeding as a high priority to reduce the health care costs in this state and improve the health of Georgia's babies.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body acknowledge the importance of breastfeeding to both babies and mothers and recognize May, 2010, as Breastfeeding Awareness Month.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to members of the public and the press.
