A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Mr. Millard Fuller; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia mourns the passing of one of its finest citizens and one of
the nation's leading public servants and entrepreneurs, Mr. Millard Fuller, on
February 3, 2009; and
WHEREAS,
born on January 3, 1935, in Lanett, Alabama, Mr. Fuller earned his law degree
from the University of Alabama in 1960 before cofounding the Fuller and Dees
Marketing Group and serving as partner in the Fuller and Dees law firm;
and
WHEREAS,
a millionaire at the age of 29, Mr. Fuller's most notable contribution was his
founding of Habitat for Humanity, a charity that builds homes for the poor
throughout the United States and around the world; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Fuller's vision of affordable housing built by families in need and local
volunteers was first attempted in the Koinonia Christian community in Americus,
Georgia, and he later moved to Zaire, Africa, to test his model for community
rebuilding and vitalization; and
WHEREAS,
after spending three years in Africa and helping many families build their own
homes, Mr. Fuller returned to the United States and formed Habitat for Humanity,
with the charity's headquarters based in Americus, its first national affiliate
in San Antonio, Texas, and its first international affiliate formed in
Guatemala; and
WHEREAS,
in 1984, Habitat for Humanity gained world-wide publicity when former United
States President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalyn, became Habitat for Humanity
partners; and
WHEREAS,
through his vision and dedication, Habitat for Humanity has helped more than
300,000 families move from deplorable housing into simple homes they helped
build and can afford; and
WHEREAS,
in 2005, Mr. Fuller continued his altruistic deeds with the founding of the
Fuller Center for Housing, a charity also devoted to helping families in need of
homes; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Fuller's dedicated public service and remarkable contributions to the United
States and the world were recognized by President Bill Clinton with the Medal of
Freedom; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Fuller was renowned for his significant organizational and leadership
talents, his remarkable patience and diplomacy, his keen sense of vision, and
his sensitivity to the needs of the citizens of his community, earning him the
respect and admiration of his colleagues and associates; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Fuller's surviving family includes his loving and devoted wife, Linda, four
remarkable children, Christopher, Kimberly, Faith, and Georgia, and eight
delightful grandchildren; and
WHEREAS,
this magnanimous and caring Georgian will long be remembered by his family,
friends, and neighbors and the thousands of families whose lives he has
influenced.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body hereby joins in honoring
the life and memory of Mr. Millard Fuller and commending his many great
achievements.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. Millard
Fuller.
