A RESOLUTION


Commending Justice Carol W. Hunstein; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Justice Carol W. Hunstein has long been recognized for her fair, balanced, and thorough consideration of the issues and legal principles and precedents as a Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court; and

WHEREAS, after earning her law degree from Stetson University, Justice Hunstein began her legal career in private practice before being elected to the Superior Court of DeKalb County in 1984; and

WHEREAS, as a Superior Court judge, Justice Hunstein chaired many DeKalb County Committees, including the Alimony and Support Unit Committee, the Diversion Center Committee, the Probation Committee, and the Domestic Violence Task Force; and

WHEREAS, appointed to the Georgia Supreme Court in 1992 by Governor Zell Miller, Justice Hunstein is the second woman in history to serve as a permanent member of the Supreme Court; and

WHEREAS, during her distinguished judicial career, Justice Hunstein has been recognized with numerous awards, such as the Commitment to Equality Award from the Georgia Bar Association, the Joseph T. Tuggle Professionalism Award, and the Margaret Brent Award from the American Bar Association; and

WHEREAS, on July 1, 2009, Justice Hunstein was sworn in as Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court; and

WHEREAS, along with the prestigious honor of being named Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Hunstein was recognized with the Magnolia Leadership Award from the Georgia Commission on Women and the Georgia Women's Institute; and
WHEREAS, Justice Hunstein has earned a reputation as a clear thinker and hard worker, as a judge whose opinions are supported by meticulous research and careful consideration, and as an equitable, impartial leader whose decisions are governed by the rules of honesty and fair play; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this remarkable and distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Justice Carol W. Hunstein on her outstanding judicial service to the State of Georgia and congratulate her upon the grand occasion of being sworn in as Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Justice Carol W. Hunstein.
