A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Mr. George Leslie Howell; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens
with the passing of Mr. George Leslie Howell on February 2, 2010;
and
WHEREAS,
a native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Mr. Howell earned a bachelor's degree in
chemistry from Knoxville College and worked as a chemist for nearly three years
before returning to school at Howard University Law School, where he graduated
cum laude; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Howell worked for Atlanta Legal Aid and as an associate for Atlanta law
firms Moore, Alexander & Rindskopf and Jackson, Patterson, Parks &
Franklin before serving as managing partner at Howell & Associates and of
counsel with Adorno & Yoss; and
WHEREAS,
known for his legal reasoning, sharp analytical skills, and compassion for
others, Mr. Howell often handled uncontested adoption cases, finding great joy
in uniting children with families who wanted to love them; and
WHEREAS,
he was known for his active lifestyle, enjoying jogging, cycling, and playing
tennis and was a strong supporter of community development; and
WHEREAS,
a true champion for Zoo Atlanta, Mr. Howell served as Zoo Atlanta's general
counsel since the zoo was privatized and was a tremendous help in expediting the
2007 zoo bonds; and
WHEREAS,
a community leader, Mr. Howell was instrumental in the creation of the
Neighborhood Arts Center, the Atlanta African Film Society, the Hammonds House
Museum, and the National Black Arts Festival and provided vision and leadership
to the boards of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the High Museum of Art, the
Atlanta Life Insurance Company, and Historic District Development Corporation;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Howell diligently and conscientiously devoted his time, talents, and energy
for seven years to the Paideia board of trustees, where he served as chairman
from 2001 to 2006 and was instrumental in numerous successful projects,
including the establishment of a long-term facilities plan and the launching of
a capital campaign that raised over $25 million for the school; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Howell was united in love and marriage to his adoring wife, Mtamanika, and
was blessed with the love of two remarkable daughters, Leslye and Nika, and two
delightful grandsons, George and Gabriel; and
WHEREAS,
a compassionate and generous man, Mr. Howell will long be remembered for his
love of art, jazz, family, and friendship, and this loyal husband, father,
uncle, jurist, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of
knowing him.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
honoring the life and memory of Mr. George Leslie Howell and express their
deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. George
Leslie Howell.
