RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending the Honorable Charles B. Mikell; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Honorable Charles B. Mikell is an honest and dedicated public servant who
strives for excellence in all his endeavors and whose primary concern has been
the fair and impartial administration of justice; and
WHEREAS,
Judge Mikell has diligently and conscientiously devoted his time, talents, and
energy to the betterment of his community and the State of Georgia as a judge
for 20 years, serving in state court, superior court, and in his current role
with the Court of Appeals; and
WHEREAS,
he served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the United
States Army as an intelligence officer, entering the service as a second
lieutenant and earning the rank of captain before his honorable discharge;
and
WHEREAS,
while in the Army, Judge Mikell valiantly and courageously protected his fellow
Americans during an assignment in West Germany and as an advisor to South
Vietnamese forces, and his meritorious service was recognized with a Bronze
Star; and
WHEREAS,
a native of Savannah, Georgia, Judge Mikell earned a bachelor's degree from
Princeton University and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill for graduate work, where he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to complete
a year of dissertation research in Prague and London; and
WHEREAS,
Judge Mikell taught Soviet History and Western Civilization at Armstrong State
College, graduated cum laude with a law degree from the University of Georgia,
and practiced law for nine years in Savannah with the firm of Brannen, Wessels
and Searcy; and
WHEREAS,
this talented barrister was appointed to the Chatham County State Court in 1985,
won an election for an open seat on the superior court in 1992, and in May,
2010, he will have completed ten years on the Georgia Court of Appeals;
and
WHEREAS,
his colleagues know him as a clear thinker and hard worker, as a man whose
strong convictions are supported by meticulous research and careful
consideration, and as an equitable, impartial leader whose decisions are
governed by the rules of honesty and fair play; and
WHEREAS,
his leadership and guidance have been instrumental on several boards and
organizations, including the King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation, the
Neighbor-to-Neighbor Justice Center, the United Way, the Coastal Empire Council
of the Boy Scouts of America, Chatham Academy, the Savannah Chapter of the
Arthritis Foundation, and Christ Episcopal Church in Savannah; and
WHEREAS,
Judge Mikell is united in love and marriage to Dr. Julia LeCraw Mikell, and they
have been blessed with three remarkable sons, Chuck, John, and Sam, and it is
abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordinary accomplishments of this
distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
the Honorable Charles B. Mikell for his efficient, effective, unselfish, and
dedicated public service to Chatham County and the State of
Georgia.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Honorable Charles B.
Mikell.
