A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Dr. David L. Sjoquist; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. David L. Sjoquist has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for his dedication to public service and expertise in public finance, urban economics, and education policy; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Sjoquist has exhibited extraordinary leadership throughout his 40 years as a professor of economics at Georgia State University, as the Dan E. Sweat Distinguished Chair in Educational and Community Policy, and as director of the Andrew Young School's Fiscal Research Center; and

WHEREAS, he has established himself as a eminent scholar, publishing in such journals as American Economic Review, Journal of Public Economics, National Tax Journal, and Review of Economics and Statistics on topics such as teenage employment, capital maintenance expenditures, local government fiscal conditions, and the urban underclass; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Sjoquist's current research interests include property taxation, school financing, local sales and income taxes, and public housing; and

WHEREAS, he has shown a deep commitment to public service, lending his expertise and analysis to the Ford Foundation, the Russell Sage Foundation, the Economic Development Administration of the United States Department of Commerce, the Fannie Mae Foundation, and the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Sjoquist has provided legislative advice on tax and policy to Senator Paul Coverdell, Senator Todd Evans, numerous governors, and to the Georgia General Assembly; and

WHEREAS, an active community leader, Dr. Sjoquist has served on various advisory boards and taskforce committees, including participating as a board member of the Atlanta Regional Commission, as a member of the City of Atlanta Advisory Task Force on Development of Green Space Plan, as chairperson of the MARTA Blue Ribbon Panel, as a member of the Urban Land Institute-Atlanta District Executive Committee, and as an executive member of Research Atlanta and Atlanta Urban League; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordinary accomplishments of this distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Dr. David L. Sjoquist for his four decades of dedicated service to the State of Georgia and Georgia State University, congratulate him upon his upcoming retirement from the Fiscal Research Center, and extend to him their utmost appreciation for his knowledge and public service.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. David L. Sjoquist.
