A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the 2009-2010 Eagle Scout class of Troop 1011 in Cherokee, Georgia; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, in order to attain the rank of Eagle Scout, the most exceptional award in scouting, a candidate must complete a rigorous program of training and demonstrate his proficiency in selected scouting techniques and attainment of the highest ideals of scouting; and

WHEREAS, only around 5 percent of scouts ever reaches this lofty level of achievement, and an amazing eight members of Troop 1011 have ably evidenced their aptitude and competency in mastering the various special skills taught through the Boy Scout program in order to receive this prestigious rank; and

WHEREAS, while it is an incredibly rare distinction for eight members from the same troop to earn the rank of Eagle Scout in the course of a year, it is even more astonishing that many of these young men have experienced the Boy Scouts of America program together since they were in the first grade as Cub Scouts; and

WHEREAS, this is only the second time in the 38 year history of Mt. Bethel's Scouting program that an entire patrol has become Eagle Scouts; and

WHEREAS, these dedicated and determined young leaders have juggled academics, sports, and extracurricular activities while working to attain the most distinguished rank conferred by the Boy Scouts of America; and

WHEREAS, together, these eight Eagle Scouts have experienced a number of Scouting adventures over the years, including biking the Appalachian Trail, biking on Cape Cod, snorkeling in Florida, and sailing to the Bahamas; and
WHEREAS, the group of eight groundbreaking scouts includes Connor Crank, Preston Ehlers, Johnathan Gopel, Kirk Malcolm, George Merriam IV, Joseph Privateer, Benjy Stamberger, and Alex Walgren; and

WHEREAS, throughout their years in the Boy Scouts of America program, this patrol has earned numerous awards, including the Baden Powell National Honor Patrol, Veteran Summer Camper Award, World Conservation Award, and U.S. Heritage Award; and

WHEREAS, these outstanding Georgians have truly exhibited a commitment to the scouting principles of honesty and fairness and have consistently conducted themselves in a manner becoming Eagle Scouts.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend the eight Eagle Scouts of Troop 1011 for their diligence and dedication in pursuing the highest honor awarded by the Boy Scouts of America and congratulate them on their rare distinction as a group.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to Connor Crank, Preston Ehlers, Johnathan Gopel, Kirk Malcolm, George Merriam IV, Joseph Privateer, Benjy Stamberger, and Alex Walgren.
