A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the Effingham County Victim Witness Assistance Program on the occasion of its 20th anniversary; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, established in 1989, the Effingham County Victim Witness Assistance Program is a nonprofit organization that provides extensive services to victims and witnesses of personal injury crimes and is the only program of its kind in the State of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, clients of the Effingham County Victim Witness Assistance Program are offered crisis intervention services, emotional support and understanding, referral to a safe shelter, referrals to programs that assist in dealing with trauma, and relocation assistance; and

WHEREAS, the program aids victims and witnesses throughout their legal proceedings by providing an explanation of the criminal justice system, notice of court proceedings, assistance in obtaining a temporary protective order, help in preparing a victim impact statement, a court companion, information on the status of their cases, and assistance in filing for crime victim compensation; and

WHEREAS, the program's early advocates, such as United Way's Bonnie Dixon and Reverend Dr. George Dillard, were instrumental in its creation, and the leadership provided by dedicated employees, volunteers, and Executive Director Glenda King have helped the program grow and thrive; and

WHEREAS, since this amazing program's inception, over 2,500 clients have benefitted from its services, greatly furthering its goal of stopping the cycle of violence, changing the future, and demonstrating that there is love and peace in the world; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding work of this fine organization and its numerous contributions to the citizens of this state be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend the Effingham County Victim Witness Assistance Program for providing victims and witnesses of crimes with unparalleled services and support and congratulate this distinguished organization on the occasion of its 20th anniversary.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Effingham County Victim Witness Assistance Program.
