A RESOLUTION

Commending the Georgia Chapter of the National MS Society and recognizing March 22, 2012, as Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Day at the state capitol; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic and disabling disease of the central nervous system in which the progression, severity, and specific symptoms cannot be foreseen; and

WHEREAS, every hour of every day someone new is diagnosed with MS, a disease that can erode a person's abilities and hopes, halt a career, and unravel the fabric of families; and

WHEREAS, last year in Georgia, $2.27 million was raised to find the cure for MS, develop effective treatments for the disease, and provide a wide range of client programs to improve the lives of the 9,000 individuals living with MS in Georgia; and

WHEREAS, this significant monetary investment has helped to make remarkable advances in treating MS, such as new medications which may reduce or delay future disability for people with MS; and

WHEREAS, research advances have brought the reality of a cure for MS closer, yet much remains to be done, and services must continue to be provided to those who live with the disease; and

WHEREAS, there are public and private agencies, including the Georgia Chapter of the National MS Society, available to serve the constantly changing needs of those with MS and their families living in Georgia by extending essential services to all who need them; and

WHEREAS, this resolution commemorating March 22, 2012, is also dedicated to March 4th, the only date that gives a command, "March Forth," to "keep people with Multiple Sclerosis moving"; and
WHEREAS, the diligent efforts of individuals working to find a cure for MS and the brave and courageous fight of those living with MS are worthy of recognition.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend the Georgia Chapter of the National MS Society for its efforts to help "create a world free of MS" and recognize March 22, 2012, as Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Day at the state capitol.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Georgia Chapter of the National MS Society.
