A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Mrs. Patricia May; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Patricia May has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for the vital role that she has played in the teaching profession and her deep personal commitment to the education of the students of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, Mrs. May was educated in the Atlanta Public School System and earned a bachelor's degree from Tennessee State University, a master's degree from Southern Illinois University, and an administrative certificate from the State University of West Georgia; and

WHEREAS, she has dedicated 37 years to molding young minds and challenging students through her work in the field of education, leading the students of S.H. Archer High School, Clark Junior High School in East St. Louis, East St. Louis Senior High School, and Lithonia High School; and

WHEREAS, this highly respected professional educator moved from the classroom into the field of educational administration in 1994, serving as Discipline and Attendance Assistant Principal and Instructional Assistant Principal at Lithonia High School; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. May has a tradition of excellence on the track as well as in the classroom, winning the Georgia High School State Championships in the 200 meter dash, the 4x100 meter relay, and the 4x200 meter relay in 1968 and 1969, being recognized as an All-American while at Tennessee State University from 1969 to 1973, and helping set an American record in the 4x200 meter relay at the Dogwood Relays while at Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, currently Principal of Lithonia Middle School, Mrs. May's dedication to young people has been recognized with numerous honors and awards, including a Pillar of the Community Award in Education from the City of Lithonia, Coach of the Year from DeKalb County, and Relay Coach of the Year at the Illinois State Meet in 1979; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of her contributions to the students in this state, it is abundantly fitting and proper for this body to honor the extraordinary commitment and accomplishments of this outstanding individual.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body heartily and gratefully commend Mrs. Patricia May for her decades of sacrifice, foresight, accomplishment, and contributions on behalf of education in Georgia and for the positive influence she has had upon the lives and futures of countless young people in this state.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Patricia May.
