A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and commending the Black Crowes; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Black Crowes rock and roll band began in 1984 in Atlanta, Georgia, as a revivalist band dedicated to celebrating and playing 1970s-era blues rock and have been hailed by Melody Maker as "The Most Rock 'n' Roll Rock 'n' Roll Band in the World"; and

WHEREAS, originally called Mr. Crowes Garden, the Black Crowes have been driven to succeed by brothers Chris and Rich Robinson, and today they are listed at #92 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock; and

WHEREAS, in 1990, the band released their first studio album, Shake Your Money Maker, which received multiplatinum certification and has sold over 8 million copies worldwide, and was voted 'Best New American Band' by the readers of Rolling Stone; and

WHEREAS, a stripped-down, sexy sound that combines R&B, blues, arena rock, and boogie, Shake Your Money Maker came along at a time when grunge and alternative rock had temporarily done away with the notion of rock as a place for playful, soulful good times; and

WHEREAS, their songs "Hard to Handle" and "She Talks to Angels" from the Shake Your Money Maker album both broke into the Top 30 on the pop charts in 1991; and

WHEREAS, their second album, the double-platinum The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, was released in 1992 and hit #1 on the Billboard 200 chart; and

WHEREAS, in 1994 they released Amorica, which reached Gold status, selling over 500,000 copies; they released Three Snakes and One Charm in 1996; and they followed up with By Your Side in 1999 and Lions in 2001; and

WHEREAS, after a break to pursue solo careers in 2002, the band reunited in 2005, releasing Warpaint in 2008, which debuted at #5 on the Billboard 200 chart, and the double record Before the Frost...Until the Freeze in 2009; and

WHEREAS, styled after the Rolling Stones, the Black Crowes have amassed an international fan base and following over the last three decades, and the successful music career of this Georgia band is worthy of recognition.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize the Black Crowes for three decades of incredible music and extend to them sincere best wishes for future success in the music industry.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Black Crowes.
