A RESOLUTION

Urging the Department of Transportation to seek out alternative options to alleviate motor vehicle congestion throughout Metro Atlanta; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Georgia General Assembly shall be included in a deliberative manner when major transportation projects are being discussed for future implementation; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Transportation shall seek out the use of alternative solutions to address the continued congestion mitigation in and around Metro Atlanta; and

WHEREAS, the use of innovative technology is helpful in mitigating congestion and new solutions are needed to create an efficient transportation system and reduce congestion; and

WHEREAS, moveable barriers utilize existing roads and provide more capacity during peak travel times in months rather than years and are a low cost reusable asset with high flexibility that utilizes transportation dollars efficiently; and

WHEREAS, moveable barriers increase safety, reduce traffic conflicts and accidents, and can be used as a tool that enables faster and safer responses to emergencies and accidents; and

WHEREAS, reversible lanes based on the flow of peak hour traffic congestion have been implemented and successful for many cities across the country to account for congestion mitigation; and

WHEREAS, transportation is a critical component to this state's long-term economic prosperity and working together to improve this state's infrastructure will be worth the investment.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body urge the Department of Transportation to seek out alternative options to alleviate motor vehicle congestion throughout Metro Atlanta.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Department of Transportation.
