A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Dr. Robert Michael Franklin upon the occasion of his retirement; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. Robert Michael Franklin is the tenth president of Morehouse College, the nation's largest private, four-year liberal arts college for men; and

WHEREAS, after graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Morehouse College in 1975 with a degree in political science and religion, Dr. Franklin earned a master's degree of divinity in Christian social ethics and pastoral care from Harvard Divinity School, and a doctorate degree from the University of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Franklin's vast career in education has included positions with the University of Chicago, Harvard Divinity School, Colgate-Rochester Divinity School, and Emory University's Candler School of Theology; and

WHEREAS, a celebrated author as well as a fine educator, Dr. Franklin has also served as a program officer in human rights and social justice at the Ford Foundation, and is a contributing commentator for National Public Radio's "All Things Considered" and Atlanta Interfaith Broadcasting Television; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Franklin serves as a role model with his community involvement in such organizations as the Atlanta Rotary Club, Sigma Pi Phi fraternity, Leadership Atlanta, Community Foundation of Metro Atlanta, the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, Character Education Partnership, and Congress of National Black Churches; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Franklin is united in love and marriage to Dr. Cheryl Goffney Franklin and is the father of three remarkable children, Imani, Robert, and Julian; and

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia is honored to have such a distinguished and learned citizen as the leader of an institution that provides quality education for this state's young leaders.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend the leadership and guidance of Morehouse College's President, Dr. Robert Michael Franklin, congratulate him upon the grand occasion of his retirement, and extend to him their sincere best wishes for continued health and happiness.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Robert Michael Franklin.
