A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending the Honorable Marvin S. Arrington, Sr., on the occasion of his
retirement; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Honorable Marvin S. Arrington, Sr., has long been recognized by the citizens
of this state for the vital role that he has played in leadership and his deep
personal commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
he was one of the first African American graduates from the School of Law of
Emory University in 1967, received his undergraduate degree from Clark College,
and studied as an International Business Fellow at the London School of
Business; and
WHEREAS,
he was first elected to the Atlanta Board of Aldermen in 1969, served as
president of the Atlanta City Council from 1981 to 1996, and was senior partner
in the law firm of Arrington and Hollowell before being appointed as the
Superior Court Judge for Fulton County in 2002; and
WHEREAS,
an active member in his community, Judge Arrington has been a member of numerous
boards, including the Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority, the
Metropolitan Atlanta Olympic Authority, the Atlanta Convention and Visitors
Bureau, the Advisory Board of the World Trade Club of Atlanta, the Commerce
Club, the Atlanta Business League, the Atlanta Lawyers Club, and the Board of
Governors of the Atlanta City Club; and
WHEREAS,
he has been honored numerous times, including as "One of Atlanta's Top 25
Lawyers" by
Atlanta
magazine and "Among the 100 Most Influential People in Georgia" by
Georgia
Trend magazine, and has received the Chief
Justice Robert Benham Award, the Seth Kirschenbaum Diversity Award, and the
Clarence Cooper Legacy Award; and
WHEREAS,
Judge Arrington's significant organizational and leadership talents, his
remarkable patience and diplomacy, his keen sense of vision, and his sensitivity
to the needs of the citizens of this state have earned him the respect and
admiration of his colleagues and associates; and
WHEREAS,
he is a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for
integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness; and
WHEREAS,
Judge Arrington has served with honor and distinction, and his vision and
unyielding commitment will be sorely missed upon the occasion of his retirement;
and
WHEREAS,
it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this
remarkable and distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
the Honorable Marvin S. Arrington, Sr., for his efficient, effective, unselfish,
and dedicated public service to the State of Georgia, congratulate him upon the
grand occasion of his retirement, and extend to him their most sincere best
wishes for continued health and happiness.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Honorable Marvin S.
Arrington, Sr.
