A RESOLUTION


Recognizing the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America program and commending the Flint River Council on its Scouting for Food project; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Boy Scouts of America was founded in 1911 and was designed to instill the youth of this nation with the moral and ethical principles and the habits, practices, and attitudes that are conducive to good character, citizenship, and health; and

WHEREAS, scouting evolved during the early 1900's through the efforts of several men dedicated to bettering youth who conceived a program of outdoor activities that developed skills in young boys and gave them a sense of enjoyment, fellowship, and a code of conduct for everyday living; and

WHEREAS, this year, the Boy Scouts of America program celebrates its 100th anniversary with 100 years of teaching America's youth patriotism, courage, self-reliance, and kindred values; and

WHEREAS, National Good Turn Day was established to celebrate annually the public service mission of scouting and the principles of the Boy Scouts of America program; and

WHEREAS, from February 6-13, 2010, the Georgia Flint River Council held its annual Scouting for Food project, collecting food items in honor of the basic principles of scouting; and

WHEREAS, the Georgia Flint River Council embraces eight counties, Coweta, Fayette, Henry, Spalding, Butts, Pike, Lamar, and Upson; and

WHEREAS, the Boy Scouts of America is the nation's foremost program of character development and values based leadership training for youth, fostering the philosophy of duty to God, country, and self and a commitment to others through a comprehensive program of responsible fun, outdoor adventure, and service projects; and

WHEREAS, many Boy Scouts and their families diligently and selflessly collected and distributed food donations to the Salvation Army and the Food Pantry throughout the Flint River area during the Scouting for Food project, and their dedication and commitment is worthy of recognition.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize the Boy Scouts of America program on its 100th anniversary, commend the Georgia Flint River Council on its wonderful public service project, Scouting for Food, and applaud its numerous selfless participants.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to the Georgia Flint River Council Boy Scout Coordinator Heather Kostka, Ronotohachi District Chairperson Steve Trawick, Coweta District Chairperson Verna Funk, Fayette District Chairperson David Flohr, and Tussahaw District Chairperson Laura Byerly.
