A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending the Coweta-Fayette-South Fulton County Forestry Unit, known as
"Coweta Forestry Unit" on being named the Georgia Forestry Commission 2011
Northern Unit of the Year; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the mission of the Georgia Forestry Commission is "To provide leadership,
service, and education in the protection and conservation of Georgia's forest
resources"; and
WHEREAS,
each year one forestry unit is selected as Georgia Forestry Commission's
Northern Unit of the Year based on various measures of accomplishments that are
weighed and voted upon by the Georgia Forestry Commission's leadership;
and
WHEREAS,
the Coweta Forestry Unit's most notable achievements include increasing the
amount of landowner assistance provided to the growing urban population
spreading over three counties with limited personnel resources, resulting in:
437 acres of agriculture prescribed burning assists, 3,787 acres of
silvicultural burning assists, 250 miles of firebreaks, coordinating the
distribution of over 600,000 seedlings to Chattahoochee District and Coosa
District, conducting 37 community programs which reached almost 17,000 people,
leading the Coweta County Lumberjack event at the County Fair, participating in
Buckarama and Prescribed Burn Awareness Week at the State Capitol, achieving
certification for two new Tree Cities (Chattahoochee Hills and Fayetteville),
recertifying five Tree Cities, assisting on multiple incidents throughout the
record-breaking 2011 fire season and the April 2011 tornadoes, providing
leadership to the District through service on the District Training Team and
Inspection Team, and steadfastly maintaining the grounds at the Chattahoochee
District Office; and
WHEREAS,
in addition, the Coweta Forestry Unit maintained outstanding wildfire protection
of 327,074 forested acres in three counties during a wildfire season that
resulted in the damage or loss in Georgia of over $19.8 million worth of
personal property and threatened an additional $461.3 million worth of personal
property; and
WHEREAS, due to these outstanding accomplishments of the Coweta Forestry Unit in the year 2011, the unit was selected as Georgia Forestry Commission's Northern Unit of the Year; and
WHEREAS, due to these outstanding accomplishments of the Coweta Forestry Unit in the year 2011, the unit was selected as Georgia Forestry Commission's Northern Unit of the Year; and
WHEREAS,
the recognized Forestry Unit consists of dedicated GFC Professional First Ranger
Jeff Mansour serving under the leadership of Chief Ranger Terry Quigley;
and
WHEREAS,
the accomplishments of the Coweta Forestry Unit are a clear indication of the
dedication and teamwork of the individuals at the unit, their ability to work
together with limited personnel resources and surpass the goals of the work
group, the pride they possess in their job, and their complete devotion to
Georgia's citizens and their fellow GFC professionals; and
WHEREAS,
the Coweta Forestry Unit brings great pride to the citizens of Coweta, Fayette,
and South Fulton counties, the Chattahoochee District, the Georgia Forestry
Commission, and the State of Georgia.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
the Coweta Forestry Unit for being named the 2011 Northern Unit of the
Year.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Chief Ranger Terry
Quigley.
