A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the Sigma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority on the occasion of its 80th anniversary; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Sigma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will celebrate its 80th anniversary October 7-9, 2011, during the Clark Atlanta University Homecoming Weekend; and

WHEREAS, "Embracing 80 Years of Excellence . . . The Legacy Continues" is the theme of the celebration which will serve as a reunion for hundreds of members from throughout the nation; and

WHEREAS, a major goal of the celebration will be the continuation of a student scholarship fund to benefit undergraduate members of Sigma Chapter; and

WHEREAS, the members of Sigma Chapter are beneficiaries of the vision of nine sensational ladies, the "Pearl Bearing" sisters, inducted by Edna Morris into the chapter, which was chartered on May 6, 1931; and

WHEREAS, members carry on the legacy of the Pearl Bearing sisters and that of the 22 collegiate women who founded Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., on January 13, 1913, at Howard University; and

WHEREAS, these young women wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence, provide scholarships, provide support to the underserved, educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of positive public policy, and highlight issues and provide solutions for problems in their communities; and

WHEREAS, since its founding, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., has grown to include more than 200,000 members in more than 900 chapters located in the United States, England, Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea, including more than 50 local chapters throughout the State of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, the goals and ideals of Delta Sigma Theta are reflected in its five-point program based on economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement; and

WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta's national membership includes a cross-section of the academic, business, religious, and government sectors, including several members of the Georgia General Assembly.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize the members of the Sigma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority for their outstanding contributions to the State of Georgia and congratulate them on the grand occasion of the chapter's 80th anniversary.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Sigma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
