RESOLUTION
Expressing
the sense of the House of Representatives with respect to the tragic shooting in
Tucson, Arizona, on January 8, 2011; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the members of the House of Representatives express our sympathy and condolences
to the victims of the Arizona shooting that killed or injured more than a dozen
people at the public constituents event in Tucson on Saturday, January 8, 2011;
and
WHEREAS,
our thoughts and prayers go to Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and the numerous
bystanders who were involved in this senseless tragedy and to their families;
and
WHEREAS,
we express hope for the speedy and full recovery of those wounded in the
shooting and offer our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and loved
ones of Christina Taylor Green, Dorothy Morris, John Roll, Phyllis Schneck,
Dorwan Stoddard, and Gabriel Zimmerman, who lost their lives in the attack;
and
WHEREAS,
we also commend for their bravery several of those in attendance at this event,
including Patricia Maisch, Roger Sulzgeber, Joseph Zimudie, and Daniel
Hernandez, Jr., who helped apprehend the gunman and assist the injured,
selflessly risking their lives for the safety of others; and
WHEREAS,
we collectively as a body condemn this horrific attack; and
WHEREAS,
it is times like these that remind us that as Americans we should resolve to
carry on a dialogue of democracy consisting of friendly discourse as we openly
exchange ideas, striving to address the issues and challenges facing the great
people of our state and the generations to come; and
WHEREAS,
as we go forth in serving the great people of this state, we will keep in our
hearts and in our minds those who have paid a great cost to insure that we are
given the great honor to be Representatives in such an amazing form of
government; and
WHEREAS,
may we lead this state while honoring our system of democracy with bipartisan
civility and cooperation.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body express our sympathy and condolences to those involved in the tragedy
on January 8, 2011, in Tucson, Arizona; commend those who selflessly risked
their own lives during the attack to help others; condemn the attack; and commit
to allow this event to serve as the latest reminder of the importance of showing
courtesy and mutual respect to those exercising their rights and participating
in our democratic system of government.
