A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Mr. James Homer Hefner; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Mr. James Homer Hefner on May 18, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hefner was born on October 18, 1932, in Gilmer County, Georgia, a beloved son of the late J. Homer Hefner and Essie Reece Hefner; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Gilmer High School and member of the school's first organized football team, Mr. Hefner earned a bachelor's degree from North Georgia College, a master's degree from Western Carolina University, a certificate in guidance and counseling from the University of Georgia, and a specialist's degree from Georgia State University; and

WHEREAS, he served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty as an officer with the United States Army before he began a 38-year career in education; and

WHEREAS, during his remarkable career in education, Mr. Hefner served as a classroom teacher, an administrator, and eventually retired from the position of superintendent of schools for Gilmer County; and

WHEREAS, a community leader, Mr. Hefner was active with the Ellijay Lions Club and the Rotary Club and was recognized as Citizen of the Year in 1999 and as one of the Ellijay Times-Courier's 100 People of the Century; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hefner was united in love and marriage for 57 wonderful years to Esther Ralston Hefner, and was blessed with the support of his children, Dr. Rhonda Hefner-Packer and Ken Packer and Sam and Emily Burrell; and

WHEREAS, he was the proud grandfather of six amazing grandchildren, Amy, Lynn, Jim, Millicent, Maggie, and Rob, and four delightful great-grandchildren, Alexis, Colton, James Joseph, and Joshua Patrick; and

WHEREAS, he gave inspiration to many through his high ideals, morals, and deep concern for his fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding he demonstrated to his family and friends were admired by others; and

WHEREAS, he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example he made of his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous man, Mr. Hefner will long be remembered for his love of family and friendship, and this loyal husband, father, grandfather, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Mr. James Homer Hefner and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. James Homer Hefner.
