A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the Boys & Girls Clubs of Georgia and Boys & Girls Clubs of Georgia's 2011 Youth of the Year; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, in small towns and metropolitan areas, the youth of this nation are struggling to create a bright future in the face of crime, substance abuse, low fitness levels, and high dropout rates; and

WHEREAS, the Boys & Girls Clubs encourage young people through all of their programs and particularly through their Youth of the Year program by promoting and recognizing teens who have developed sound character, leadership abilities, and a willingness to give back to their communities; and

WHEREAS, the Boys & Girls Clubs Youth of the Year program recognizes teens for outstanding contributions to a member's family, school, community, and Boys & Girls Clubs; and

WHEREAS, sponsored by the Readers Digest Foundation since its inception in 1947, the program acknowledges the personal challenges faced by candidates and the obstacles individuals have overcome in their lives; and

WHEREAS, winners of the Youth of the Year award are selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, community service, leadership ability, and the consideration of any physical, social, or emotional obstacles that have been overcome; and

WHEREAS, the Reader's Digest Foundation awards the winners of this prestigious contest a $1,000.00 college scholarship, with state winners having the opportunity to be selected as Regional Youth of the Year and National Youth of the Year; and

WHEREAS, the 2011 Georgia Youth of the Year represents young people in Georgia and the over 130,000 young people being served in nearly 170 Boys & Girls Clubs state wide; and

WHEREAS, Georgia's 2011 Youth of the Year will be one of nine to compete for the Southeast Regional Youth of the Year award in the early summer of 2011; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordinary accomplishments of the Georgia 2011 Youth of the Year be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize the Boys & Girls Clubs of Georgia's 2011 Youth of the Year for a demonstrated commitment to improving the lives of others and serving as a shining example for all young people in this state.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Georgia and Boys & Girls Clubs of Georgia's 2011 Youth of the Year.
