RESOLUTION
Recognizing
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) and declaring Wednesday, March
23, 2011, AVID Day at the state capitol; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) was developed in 1980 as a
college readiness program by Mary Catherine Swanson at Claremont High School;
and
WHEREAS,
the program began as an elective class taken during the regular school day where
students were held to the highest standards and provided with academic and
social support; and
WHEREAS,
in 1992, the AVID Center was established as a nonprofit organization, and the
program has since evolved into a fourth through twelfth grade system of learning
that successfully prepares students for college readiness and eligibility;
and
WHEREAS,
from its humble beginnings in one high school with 32 students, the AVID program
has now expanded to 47 states, 16 countries, and 4,500 school sites, impacting
over 400,000 students; and
WHEREAS,
AVID's systematic approach to learning is designed to support students, parents,
and educators as they increase school-wide and district-wide learning and
performance; and
WHEREAS,
public sector funding organizations, independent research, and AVID's own data
shows that AVID students are more likely to take honors and advance placement
classes, complete their college eligibility requirements, and be accepted into
colleges; and
WHEREAS,
AVID is in 9 school districts and 29 schools in Georgia and impacts more than
10,000 Georgia students, families, and communities; and
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend the contributions of AVID to the community, state, and country
and recognize Wednesday, March 23, 2011, as AVID Day at the state
capitol.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Mervin
Jenkins and Dr. Barbara Smith.
