A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the need to promote diabetes awareness and testing in minority communities; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States behind heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic lower respiratory diseases, and accidents; and

WHEREAS, the American Diabetes Association estimates that 23.6 million adults and children in the United States have diabetes and that the disease is a leading cause of death among minorities, causing heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, and amputations; and

WHEREAS, nearly half of those who have already been diagnosed with diabetes are not reaching their blood glucose target levels; and

WHEREAS, not gaining control of blood glucose levels puts patients at risk for serious complications including cardiovascular disease, blindness, kidney disease and dialysis, and nerve damage and amputation.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body support awareness campaigns and public education programs on management and recognition of symptoms of diabetes and urge those diagnosed with the disease to work with their healthcare providers to gain control of their blood glucose levels and to manage and prevent complications caused by diabetes.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body supports efforts to educate providers about treatment standards tailored to individual patients, especially minorities, and supports programs and educational information that enhances availability of culturally sensitive healthcare, thus resulting in more impactful healthcare delivery.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to members of the public and the press.
