A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Mr. Phillip Lee Williams on his induction into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, on March 23, 2010, Mr. Phillip Lee Williams was inducted into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, the beloved son of Marshall Williams and the late Ruth Williams, Mr. Williams was instilled with a deep and abiding love of the arts at a young age; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Williams earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Georgia and was recognized during his senior year with an honorable mention in the inaugural Agnes Scott Writers Festival; and

WHEREAS, a newspaper journalist for a number of years, Mr. Williams served as associate editor of The Madisonian and worked for The Athens Observer before returning to the University of Georgia to pursue a master's degree in English; and

WHEREAS, after completing his graduate work at the University of Georgia, Mr. Williams remained at the school to serve as a faculty member and has served as assistant dean for public information since 1985; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Williams has authored 14 published books, including ten novels, three works of nonfiction, and a volume of poetry; and

WHEREAS, his books focus largely on nature, aging, and marginalized people, have been translated into several foreign languages, and have been featured in Georgia textbooks; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Williams's novel A Distant Flame won the Michael Shaara Prize for best Civil War novel published in the country in 2004; and
WHEREAS, a native of Athens, Georgia, Mr. Williams settled in Oconee County with his wife Linda a number of years ago and many of his stories are set in Madison; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Williams is among the finest writers the State of Georgia has ever produced and his induction into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame is an honor befitting of his talent as a writer and supporter of the arts.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Mr. Phillip Lee Williams on his incredible literary works and congratulate him upon his recent induction into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Phillip Lee Williams.
