RESOLUTION
Commending
Joseph D. Nelson, chief of police of the City of Thomson; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Joseph D. Nelson was recently appointed as chief of police of the City of
Thomson and is the first black person to attain such rank in the city's history;
and
WHEREAS,
his distinguished career in law enforcement spans 21 years, including 18 years
moving up through the ranks as a road patrol officer, sergeant, lieutenant, and
chief criminal investigator with the Washington police department;
and
WHEREAS,
he was also a military policeman in the United States Army, serving as a
bodyguard for general officers and foreign dignitaries; and
WHEREAS,
he is a strong advocate of community policing, developing personal relationships
and rapport with the citizens that the department serves; and
WHEREAS,
he is a native of Jefferson County and grew up in Wrens, graduated from Wrens
High School, played football under the late coach Erk Russell at Georgia
Southern University, and is a graduate of Troy University's Augusta campus, from
which institution he holds both bachelor of science and masters degrees, magna
cum laude, in criminal justice.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body congratulate Joseph D. Nelson upon his appointment as chief of police
of the City of Thompson.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Chief Joseph
D. Nelson.
