A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Master Sergeant Lewis H. Wells, Jr.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Master Sergeant Lewis H. Wells, Jr., of Canton, Georgia, on December 5, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Master Sergeant Wells was born on September, 18, 1930, in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, and was raised on a farm before joining the United States Army to serve as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty; and

WHEREAS, he valiantly and courageously protected Americans and democracy in Panama, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and with three full tours in Vietnam as a member of the 101st Airborne and the 5th Special Forces group; and

WHEREAS, Master Sergeant Wells served with the elite Special Operations group CCN recon as a member of Special Forces for 14 years, where he was trained in Arabic, Romanian, Turkish, French, Vietnamese, and German; and

WHEREAS, the consummate Special Forces soldier, Master Sergeant Wells afforded his subordinates great leadership and guidance which allowed them to excel and was recognized with numerous medals and commendations, including a Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, a National Defense Service Medal, a Meritorious Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation, a Vietnam Unit Award, a Combat Infantry Badge, an Expert Badge Rifle M-16, and a Master Parachute Badge; and

WHEREAS, upon his retirement from service to this nation in the military, Master Sergeant Wells became a master electrician and was an active mason and volunteer for Habitat for Humanity; and
WHEREAS, Master Sergeant Wells was united in love and marriage for 60 wonderful years to his wife, Audrey, and was blessed with four children, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild; and

WHEREAS, he gave inspiration to many through his high ideals, morals, and deep concern for his fellow citizens, and, by the example he made of his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous man, Master Sergeant Wells will long be remembered for his love of country, family, and friendship, and this loyal husband, father, grandfather, and patriot will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Master Sergeant Lewis H. Wells, Jr., and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Master Sergeant Lewis H. Wells, Jr.
