A RESOLUTION


Honoring and commending the Honorable Representative Burke Day; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Representative Burke Day will retire at the end of this year after serving the citizens of Chatham County for 15 years in the General Assembly; and

WHEREAS, since his election in 1995 he has been a member of the House Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security and, in 2005, he was appointed Committee Chairman; and

WHEREAS, as Committee Chairman, he diligently and tirelessly led this state in the pursuit of improvements in public safety and greater homeland security for all Georgians; and

WHEREAS, he has been a vocal proponent of state preparedness and emergency readiness, always stressing the importance of educating elected officials; and

WHEREAS, as an advocate for law enforcement officers, he has been responsible for creating study committees and passing legislation to increase the salaries and benefits of peace officers and to provide for the equitable treatment of those brave men and women who sacrifice so much in the service of their state and fellow citizens; and

WHEREAS, Chairman Burke Day has been repeatedly recognized by the law enforcement community both in this state and internationally for his tireless efforts to improve public safety and homeland security, as evidenced by his receipt of the 2007 EMS Star of Life Legislative Award and his invitation to serve as the keynote speaker at the 2007 International Institute for Counter Terrorism conference in Israel; and

WHEREAS, his dedication to public safety is further demonstrated by his service on the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council and the Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange; and
WHEREAS, Representative Burke Day is a true statesman and public servant, always encouraging others to strive for excellence, and throughout his many years of service, he has never lost sight of why he was elected and who he works for – the people; and

WHEREAS, Representative Burke Day is a man of honor, integrity, compassion, and honesty, and his service to the Georgia General Assembly will be sorely missed.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring and commending Representative Burke Day for his many years of excellent public service and wish him all happiness and success in the years to come.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Representative Burke Day.
