A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Sheriff Billy Wofford on the occasion of his retirement; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, on January 1, 2009, Sheriff Billy Wofford retired from his 28 year post as Sheriff of Pickens County, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Sheriff Wofford is highly regarded by the citizens of his community and state and by local government officials as a person of unquestioned integrity and dedication to the sound principles of law enforcement; and

WHEREAS, taking his office at the age of 32, Sheriff Wofford was the youngest sheriff elected in Pickens County history, but he worked tirelessly to prove his age was not a factor and that his expert law enforcement experience qualified him as the finest person to protect and serve Pickens County; and

WHEREAS, Sheriff Wofford's dedication, determination, and work ethic were impressive, and after his first term in office he had earned the trust and confidence of Pickens County and was reelected for an incredible six consecutive terms; and

WHEREAS, Sheriff Wofford has maintained the reputation of a kind man, having been known to rehire employees in his office after they have run against him for the seat of sheriff; and

WHEREAS, during Sheriff Wofford's tenure he has presided over three jails in Pickens County, providing safety and order to the current jail, the jail located on Camp Road, and the jail located on Main Street; and

WHEREAS, upon his retirement, Sheriff Wofford had dedicated his life to law enforcement, serving an incredible 37 years; and
WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the members of this body show their gratitude for the unique and courageous contributions of local law enforcement officers on behalf of the citizens of this state.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the care, fortitude, and selfless dedication exhibited by Sheriff Billy Wofford in carrying out the difficult duties of his vocation for nearly four decades and extend to him their utmost appreciation for having so purely and truly defined for others the meaning of public servant.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Sheriff Billy Wofford.
