RESOLUTION
Urging
state-funded higher-learning institutions to establish a recycling and waste
management program; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
according to the Georgia Recycling Coalition, it is estimated that Georgians
throw away approximately 1.9 million tons of paper, 360,000 tons of glass,
240,000 tons of aluminum, and 1 million tons of plastic annually;
and
WHEREAS,
if 10 percent of discarded recyclable materials were properly disposed, it would
save the state $2 million and $46 million in personal income and create
approximately 1,000 new jobs for the Georgia economy; and
WHEREAS,
it is suggested that students at institutions of higher learning should be in
charge of assisting the janitorial system; and
WHEREAS,
institutions should remove their general trash bins in all rooms, offices, and
hallways and replace them with recyclable trash bins that have separated
containers for all recyclable materials; and
WHEREAS,
eating lounges and cafeterias, gyms, and bathrooms should contain two separate
waste bins, one for nonreusable waste and one for reusable waste;
and
WHEREAS,
campuses should utilize learning materials and supplies in order to promote
green purchasing, and they should recycle and properly dispose of large items,
including motor oil, fluorescent light materials, maintenance metal, printer
cartridges, and batteries; and
WHEREAS,
campuses should encourage its students to recycle all items, and money-earning
programs should be used to aid the recycling program;
and
WHEREAS, it is imperative that the citizens of the State of Georgia reduce, reuse, and recycle products that pollute the environment and promote environmental sustainability to provide a clean future for future generations to enjoy.

NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body urge state-funded higher-learning institutions to establish a
recycling and waste management program to decrease the adverse effects of
wasteful products that pollute the environment.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the public
and the press.
