A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and commending Bethany United Methodist Church on the occasion of its 95th anniversary; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the seeds which were sown by the loving and humble efforts of the devoted original worshipers of Bethany United Methodist Church have blossomed, establishing a rich tradition and history; and

WHEREAS, organized in April of 1914 in the Grove Park neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia, Bethany United Methodist Church has grown in congregation size over the years, allowing the Word of God to spread further throughout the community; and

WHEREAS, this church was a bulwark of Christian love and concern, serving the middle class community of Northwest Atlanta through the Great Depression and rebuilding after a fire destroyed the original structure in 1932; and

WHEREAS, in 1964, the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church offered Bethany United Methodist Church land at the corner of Hicks and Hurt Road in Cobb County, to continue their ministry in an area where a large number of their members had moved; and

WHEREAS, the congregation met in the Richard Russell Elementary School until the church's first structure of worship, known as the McGrady Building, was completed; and

WHEREAS, in 1970, a new and larger sanctuary was built as Bethany United Methodist Church continued to grow and serve as the "Friendly Church at the Crossroad"; and

WHEREAS, the congregation of this church has compiled an unparalleled record of constructive, compassionate, and humanitarian service which it demonstrates daily through open minds, open hearts, and open doors; and
WHEREAS, in April of 2010, Bethany United Methodist Church will celebrate its 95th anniversary with Homecoming events and worship services, inviting all current and former members, friends, and community associates to celebrate on April 18, 2010; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this enduring example of God's message of peace and love be recognized and congratulated for its innumerable good works rendered on behalf of persons in need.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize the rich history of Bethany United Methodist Church, commend its 95 years of dedicated service to the Lord and community, and extend their warmest best wishes for its continued growth and success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to the Senior Pastor of Bethany United Methodist Church, Reverend Terry L. Phillips, and the Chairperson of the Church Council, Judge Kenneth O. Nix.
