A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Gilmer County Chamber of Commerce's 2011 Citizen of the Year, Lex Rainey; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Lex Rainey is the former Gilmer County School Superintendent and has been named as the Gilmer County Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Rainey has had many substantial contributions to the community not only though his career in education but also as a civic leader in his church; and

WHEREAS, nothing is more vital to the future of our state than the education of our young people, and Mr. Rainey exemplifies the selfless dedication which is characteristic of our finest educators; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Rainey is a highly respected educator in the Gilmer County School System, dedicating his time, talents, and energy to challenging and inspiring the future leaders of this state; and

WHEREAS, an active member in his community, Mr. Rainey has served at Ellijay First United Methodist Church, the Ellijay-Gilmer County Water and Sewerage Authority Board, and the Gilmer County Library Foundation Board of Directors and was a member of the Ellijay City Council; and

WHEREAS, he is united in love and marriage to his wife, Anne, and together they are blessed with two remarkable children, Alex and Meg; and

WHEREAS, a man of deep and abiding faith, he is a member of Ellijay First United Methodist Church; and

WHEREAS, he received various degrees from the University of Georgia; and
WHEREAS, although Mr. Rainey was born in Putnam County, folks in Gilmer County found him to be well educated, community oriented, prepared, and fair and considered him to be one of their own; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the accomplishments and contributions of this distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize Mr. Lex Rainey for his contributions on behalf of education in Georgia and for the positive influence he has had upon the lives and futures of countless young people in this state and commend him for being named the Gilmer County Chamber of Commerce's 2011 Citizen of the Year.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Lex Rainey.
