A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the life and legacy of Dr. Gilbert F. Shearron; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. Gilbert F. Shearron was born on May 4, 1929, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and dedicated his life to challenging students as an educator and setting ground-breaking standards for the field of education; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Shearron earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Middle Tennessee State University and a doctoral degree in education from George Peabody College for Teachers; and

WHEREAS, he served as a seventh and eighth grade teacher at Murfreesboro City Schools before he accepted the position as principal for elementary education, where he earned recognition as Elementary Principal of the Year for Tennessee and Croft Publications National Elementary Principal of the Year; and

WHEREAS, after completion of his doctorate, Dr. Shearron served for a year as Assistant Director of Regional Program Development and Implementation for the Central Midwestern Regional Education Laboratory; and

WHEREAS, in 1968, Dr. Shearron joined the University of Georgia's Department of Curriculum and Instruction and was named chair of the newly formed Department of Elementary Education, where he made enduring and significant contributions to the educational program at the University of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, he served as chairman of Elementary Education and Project Manager for the Competency Based Teacher Education (CBTE) Project, winning national recognition for the University and the College; and

WHEREAS, a visionary in the field of education, Dr. Shearron implemented a ground-breaking program while at the University, which paired a college instructor at Georgia with a local public school to provide educational services and serve as support for the University's student teachers assigned to that specific school; and

WHEREAS, public schools in the Athens areas embraced Dr. Shearron's program and it was an excellent attempt to build a partnership between schools and universities to provide the best education at both levels; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Shearron was united in love and marriage to the late Elizabeth "Libby" Leuthold Shearron and was blessed with three remarkable daughters, Laura, Betsy, and Mary; and

WHEREAS, during his ten years with the University of Georgia, Dr. Shearron gave form and direction to the area of elementary education in the College of Education and served as a champion of public education in Georgia.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body honor the memory and legacy of Dr. Gilbert F. Shearron and recognize the important influence he had upon education in this state.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to Dr. Gilbert F. Shearron's daughters, Laura, Betsy, and Mary.
