A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Mr. Alton Jerry Cleveland, Sr.; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens
with the passing of Mr. Alton Jerry Cleveland, Sr., on December 6, 2009;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Cleveland was born on September 11, 1932, in Hart County, Georgia, a
beloved son of the late Fred W. Cleveland and Cecil Morris Cleveland;
and
WHEREAS,
he served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the United
States Army during the Korean War, and he graduated from the University of
Georgia with bachelor's and master's degrees in education and a specialist
degree in administration; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Cleveland diligently and conscientiously devoted his time, talents, and
energy to challenging students as an educator for more than 30 years with the
Hart County School System and the State of Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
he served as a teacher, a principal, and the school superintendent for Hart
County, a Resource Center Director for the State of Georgia, and retired from
South Carolina's Anderson County School System as a middle school assistant
principal; and
WHEREAS,
both a shriner and a mason, Mr. Cleveland was a member of the Hart County
Salvation Army Board, the Hart County Golden K, the Friendship Force of Lake
Hartwell, the American Legion Post 109, the VFW, Hart County Retired Teachers,
and served as bailiff for the Hart County Superior Court and chairman of the
Hart County Water Authority; and
WHEREAS,
a man of deep and abiding faith, Mr. Cleveland was an active member of Mt.
Olivet Baptist Church, where he taught the McDoyle Sunday school class for 50
years, was a former deacon, and served on various church committees;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Cleveland was united in love and marriage to Kay Tucker Cleveland, and he was blessed with three wonderful sons, Al, Chris, and Morris, and four remarkable grandchildren, Erin, Anna, Virginia, and Will; and

WHEREAS,
he gave inspiration to many through his high ideals, morals, and deep concern
for his fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding he
demonstrated to his family and friends was admired by others; and
WHEREAS,
he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for
integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example he made of
his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and
WHEREAS,
a compassionate and generous man, Mr. Cleveland will long be remembered for his
love of family and friendship, and this loyal husband, father, grandfather,
teacher, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing
him.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join in honoring the life and memory of Mr. Alton Jerry Cleveland,
Sr., and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his
passing.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Mr. Alton Jerry Cleveland, Sr.
