A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Ms. Terri Strayhorn; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Ms. Terri Strayhorn has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for
her commitment to improving the lives of others and her advocacy on behalf of
rape survivors; and
WHEREAS,
she has diligently and conscientiously devoted her time, talents, and energy to
Rape Response, Inc., since 1988; and
WHEREAS,
Ms. Strayhorn served as a volunteer advocate and agency organizer for four years
before she accepted the position as executive director in 1992; and
WHEREAS,
during her tenure as executive director, Ms. Strayhorn established a hot line to
provide rape survivors with access to comprehensive personal services, created
the first date rape prevention curriculum in this state, and helped secure the
first specialized piece of medical equipment for sexual assault exams for the
Northeast Georgia Medical Center; and
WHEREAS,
she has helped on the state level in crafting legislation which established
degrees of rape to provide more appropriate sentencing for offenders, mandated
state-wide education on sexual assault in schools, and formed best practices
protocols for treatment and support of rape survivors in each judicial circuit;
and
WHEREAS,
Ms. Strayhorn has been recognized with numerous honors and awards, including the
Liberty Bell Award from the Gainesville Bar Association and the Liberty Bell
Award from the Georgia Bar Association for her work helping victims who testify
against their attackers; and
WHEREAS,
under her leadership, Rape Response has been recognized as a model sexual
assault center for the State of Georgia and has greatly expanded its services to
include an aftercare program for survivors and one-day training sessions for law
enforcement officers, counselors, teachers, social workers, nurses, and other
professionals; and
WHEREAS,
her significant organizational and leadership talents, her remarkable patience
and diplomacy, her keen sense of vision, and her sensitivity to the needs of the
citizens of this state have earned her the respect and admiration of her
colleagues and associates; and
WHEREAS,
it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this
remarkable and distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Ms. Terri Strayhorn for her years of efficient, effective,
unselfish, and dedicated service to the State of Georgia and recognize the
positive impact she has made upon the lives of countless rape
survivors.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Ms. Terri
Strayhorn.
