A RESOLUTION


Recognizing the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc., Day at the state capitol on February 17, 2010; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc., is a nonprofit professional organization, founded by visionary educators for women in education on a Palm Sunday in April of 1923 and incorporated on May 23, 1923; and

WHEREAS, the founding sisters include Dr. Gladys Merritt Ross, Dr. Gladys Cannon Nunery, Mildred Morris Williams, Julia Asbury Barnes, Dr. Florence Steele Hunt, Ella Wells Butler, Edna McConnell, and Marguerite Gross; and

WHEREAS, the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa expanded to the South, Midwest, Southwest, Farwest, and to Liberia West Africa, with 135 chapters and over 7,500 members; and

WHEREAS, women in the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa believe and are dedicated to imparting knowledge and encouraging creativity and independent thinking as they focus on their national theme, "Pursuit of Excellence - A Challenge to Fulfill"; and

WHEREAS, Phi Delta Kappa's three-point national program encompasses youth guidance, education and professional growth among teachers, and service to the community; and

WHEREAS, members are challenged each day to be educators who positively impact a changing society in and outside the walls of the classroom; and

WHEREAS, each year, the organization awards scholarships to high school seniors, males and females who have chosen teacher education as a college major, five college students in a teacher education program, and a teacher pursuing her doctorate in education; and

WHEREAS, Mary D. Brown, chairperson of the Commission on Civil Rights, Education, and Legislative Affairs, and Allie Belle Harrison, first vice president of programs, have coordinated an event to meet legislators and members of the Committee on Education to address the issue of education; and

WHEREAS, Representative Earnest Williams, a former teacher, is an advocate for student achievement and quality teachers, and understands the vision of Phi Delta Kappa to build today for tomorrow; and

WHEREAS, the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa will continue to foster internal growth, embrace the highest teaching ideals, and know that their investment toward the development of this nation's youth will pay dividends.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the outstanding service of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc., and its members in improving the field of education and uplifting the lives of the future leaders in this state and recognize February 17, 2010, as National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc., Day at the state capitol.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to Mary D. Brown, Allie Belle Harrison, and the Epsilon Tau Chapter of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc.
