A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
February 8, 2012, as Advanced Placement Day at the capitol; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the College Board's Advanced Placement (AP) Program offers students the
opportunity to take challenging college level courses while still in high
school; and
WHEREAS,
successful performance on the end-of-course AP exams potentially qualifies
students to receive college credit at colleges and universities worldwide,
representing a substantial savings in college tuition for students and parents;
and
WHEREAS,
this challenging AP curriculum and exam significantly contribute toward building
a globally competitive career-ready workforce in Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
the Georgia Department of Education and the College Board, which administers the
AP Program, have had a long-standing partnership to build AP in the State of
Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
15,668 public high school seniors in Georgia public schools scored a three or
higher on at least one AP exam at some point in high school in 2010;
and
WHEREAS,
Georgia had the tenth highest one-year increase of seniors scoring a three or
higher on at least one AP exam in 2010; and
WHEREAS,
this figure represents 19.1 percent of the 2010 Georgia public high school
senior class, making Georgia public schools 11th in the nation in the College
Board Excellence and Equity measure; and
WHEREAS,
Georgia is fifth in the nation when comparing the percentage of Georgia's
African American students scoring a three or higher on at least one AP exam to
that of the nation's African American student average; and
WHEREAS,
the percentage of Hispanic, American Indian, and white public school seniors
leaving high school in 2010 with a score of a three or higher on at least one
exam was equal to or greater than their respective peers across the nation,
closing the Excellence and Equity gap for these students; and
WHEREAS,
progress has been made in reducing the Excellence and Equity gap for African
American and low-income students in Georgia public schools.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize February 8, 2012, as Advanced Placement Day at the
capitol.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the public
and the press.
